BirthdayBook Privacy Policy
BirthdayBook is a birthday reminder app. The Free version shows ads; the Full Access in-app purchase removes them.
Data stored on your device
The names, birthdays and anniversaries (month, day and optional year), groups, emoji, notes, phone numbers, email addresses and notification settings you enter or import are stored on your device (in the app's documents folder and app settings). Photos you pick from your photo library, or that come with a contact you import, are resized and stored in the app's documents folder. Like other app data, these may be included in your device's iCloud or computer backup, depending on your device settings; that backup is handled by Apple, not by the developer.
A small summary of upcoming birthdays is shared with the BirthdayBook widget on the same device through an app group. If you have a paired Apple Watch with the BirthdayBook Watch app installed, names, emoji, dates and years are sent to it through Apple's WatchConnectivity and kept on the watch. We do not run a server, and the developer does not receive or collect this data.
Permissions you can grant
- Contacts: only when you choose to import from Contacts, the app reads names, birthdays, the first phone number, the first email address and the thumbnail photo of your contacts on your device, and saves the people you select in the app. Your Contacts are not changed. The import itself happens on your device; the people you saved are copied to your own iCloud only if you turn on iCloud sync (see "iCloud sync (optional)" below).
- Calendars: when you choose to import from your calendar, the app reads your calendar events on your device to find yearly all-day events and lists them for you to pick. When you choose "add to calendar", the app writes yearly all-day events (emoji, name and event type, with an internal BirthdayBook ID for that person in the event notes so the app can update the same event later) to your default calendar. If that calendar is synced (for example with iCloud), those events are synced by its provider.
- Photos: the system photo picker gives the app only the photo you select.
- Notifications and tracking: see the sections below.
iCloud sync (optional)
iCloud sync is off until you turn on "Sync with iCloud" in Settings. When it is on, your birthday entries (including names, dates, groups, notes, phone numbers and email addresses) and a list of deleted entries are stored in your own iCloud account through Apple's iCloud key-value storage, so your other devices signed in to the same account can sync them. Photos are not synced. The developer cannot access your iCloud account.
When data leaves your device
Apart from device backups, the Apple Watch app, iCloud sync and calendar events described above, and the advertising described below, data leaves your device only when you choose to: export an encrypted backup (which contains all of your birthday entries, including names, dates, groups, notes, phone numbers, email addresses, linked contact IDs and notification settings), a CSV file (internal ID, name, date, group and notes) or a calendar (.ics) file (internal ID, emoji, name, event type, date and notes); share a birthday; or start a call, message or email from a birthday. Exported files go only to the place you pick. The gift ideas button opens a Google search for the event type only; the person's name is not included. Backup passwords are not stored.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, birthday reminders are scheduled locally on your device. No notification data is sent to us.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
In the Free version, BirthdayBook shows banner ads provided by Google AdMob (Google Mobile Ads SDK). Where required, the app requests consent through Google's User Messaging Platform and shows its consent message, and you can reopen it from the "Ad Privacy" button near the ad. If the consent check fails, ads may still be requested based on the consent status saved earlier. Ad requests may send your device's IP address and device or advertising identifiers to Google, which Google uses to serve and measure ads under its own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy). According to the privacy manifests bundled with the Google Mobile Ads SDK and the User Messaging Platform SDK, these SDKs may collect the following: device identifiers, advertising data, product interaction, approximate location, performance data, crash data and other diagnostic data. Google uses them for advertising, analytics and, for the consent SDK, app functionality. The Google Mobile Ads SDK declares that its device identifier collection may be used for tracking, and the app declares device identifiers and advertising data as used for tracking, so advertising in the Free version may involve tracking across other companies' apps and websites. Once the consent check has finished (after the consent message if one is shown, and also when the consent check or message fails), the Free version asks once for your permission to track through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. Only if you allow it can the Google Mobile Ads SDK use your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) to show ads more relevant to you. If you don't allow it, ads are still shown but the SDK does not receive the IDFA, and all app features keep working. You can change this at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. The app itself does not pass your birthday entries, names or notes to advertisers. Ads are not shown after you buy Full Access.
Purchases
Full Access is a one-time in-app purchase handled by Apple through StoreKit. Apple processes your payment; the developer does not receive your payment details. The app checks your purchase status with Apple and lets you restore purchases using the same Apple ID.
Deleting your data
You can delete individual birthdays inside the app; this also removes their reminders and stored photo, and, if iCloud sync is on, removes them from the synced data. When the app first opens saved data, it also keeps a one-time safety copy of the birthday list as it was at that moment (file "birthdays.pre-phase-b.json" in the app's Documents folder). That copy is not updated afterwards, so people you delete later can still remain in it on the device until you uninstall the app. Deleting (uninstalling) BirthdayBook removes the data stored by the app on that device. Uninstalling does not remove: data already synced to your iCloud account (it stays until you delete it while sync is on, or remove BirthdayBook's data from your iCloud storage in iOS Settings); events the app added to your calendar (delete them in the Calendar app; deleting a birthday in the app does not delete its calendar event); data on your Apple Watch until the Watch app is removed; and backup, CSV or calendar files you exported (delete them where you saved them); and copies of the app's data, including that safety copy, inside iCloud or computer backups of your device made before you deleted or uninstalled (they stay until you delete those backups yourself, for example in iCloud settings or on your computer). Because we hold no copy of your data, there is nothing to delete on our side.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here.
